Benefiting Character Counts

When participants finish the Hy-Vee 6k run/walk on Drake University’s famed “Blue Oval,” they will have covered just over 3.7 miles. Some will do it at a 10-minute-per-mile pace that burns more than 400 calories. Others will worry less about their time and more about the good time they’re having. Families will share the course with casual joggers, who will rub elbows with more serious runners. But medical studies show that no matter your age, gender or level of competition, the release of endorphins produced by running and walking combine to reduce stress and improve well-being.

The 6k run/walk race will benefit Character Counts In Iowa, a nonprofit organization headquartered at Drake that promotes the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Learn more at www.charactercountsiniowa.com

Benefiting Character Counts

Six miles, 376 yards, four and 25/32 inches. That’s how far you’ll run in the Hy-Vee 10k, give or take a few strides. The distance is a favorite of amateur and advanced runners alike, and it continues to grow in popularity. No athlete has covered a 10k road course faster than Leonard Komon of Kenya, who posted a time of 26 min., 44 sec. in 2010. Experts recommend an extended training regimen leading to your first 10k. The plan should include stretching, strength training, distance running and a high-performance diet — not to mention a great pair of shoes.

The race will benefit the Healthiest State Initiative, an effort to put Iowa atop an annual list of healthiest states — based on a series of physical and emotional well-being measures — by 2016. Nearly 300,000 Iowans kicked off the campaign in 2011 with a simultaneous 1k walk. The initiative is highlighted by the Blue Zones Project, which directs assistance to communities that develop comprehensive plans to improve the collective health of their citizens through investment in programs and infrastructure. Benefiting Character Counts

This event was introduced at Drake in 1994. Dan Carlson of White Bear, MN, was the fastest male competitor; Dana Kramer of Urbandale, IA, outpaced the women. Since then, thousands of runners have competed in age-group races that produce top finishers with world-class times and throngs of tired but happy weekend warriors who are just happy to race in their company.

At a little more than 13 miles, the half-marathon presents an endurance challenge and provides a stepping stone to every runner’s holy grail of a full marathon. The largest half-marathon is staged in Gothenburg, Sweden, where upward of 60,000 runners toe the start line each year.
